Majestic nature site
La Huasteca in Nuevo Leon is one of those natural places that can be declared as mystic, as soon as you pass through the entrance, you feel you are in another part of the world. I always talk about the natural wonders that you can find in Monterrey, a city where you can find different types of ecosystems. My first time in La Huasteca was around 20 years ago, and it was because of sport. As Iām from a desert place, Huasteca has been my home and paradise, a place where I feel comfortable.
Huasteca is a breathtaking place, no matter what time you arrive or which season you visit, it is always impressive. There are lots of sports that people can do here, from running, cycling and even rock climbing. However, this is also a place that you need to respect, as the mountains, even though they are majestic, they are also really steep and dangerous. You can find lots of endangered flora, like a specific type of cactus, but also quite dangerous animals like mountain cats and rattlesnakes.
This place also struggles with the human menace, there have been lots of scandals of companies that have attempted to create housing, mine works, and destruction of the zone. Activists and people have been fighting, and until now la Huasteca is still surviving. One of the facts that protects this area is the bad weather, when a heavy rain comes, the water travels really quickly through the valley, creating torrential rivers that destroy any man made infrastructure.
In the last few years, the city of Monterrey has grown heavily, and with this, the traffic to get into la Huasteca is difficult. It is impossible to visit the mountains during midweek or late hours at the weekend. As a result I now make lots of excuses not to come to this place, as I live on the other side of the city. However, when I visit these mountains, my breath is taken away, and I always take a photo of the different landscapes that it offers.
